Manipulation Under Anesthesia Manipulation Under Anesthesia is performed in a clean and safe environment. Dr. Micheal Douglas performs MUA with the assistance of his professional, well trained staff. Manipulation under anesthesia works by shutting off the muscle spasm cycle and sedating the pain perceiving nerves, which allows for complete muscle relaxation. Although the patient is asleep, their protective reflexes remain intact. Dr. Douglas then gently manipulates the joints through their normal range of motion. This helps reduce restrictive adhesions and misalignment of the spine.
